Regarding improvements on environmental performance of leather

  • Evaluation of environmental impacts of leather, by means of the “life-cycle” and “carbon footprint” analysis. It is very important that the evaluation be “from cradle to tomb”.
  • To establish tax burdens or to encourage products, according to their environmental performance.

Regarding public contracting

  • In the process of public contract awards, one of the major aspects in order to incorporate ecological criteria is respecting the principles of non-discrimination and transparency. No supplier should be preferred, while all of them should have access to the same information in order to be eligible with the same opportunities.
  • In general, the specification sheets should include environmental criteria. Suppliers with an audited Environmental Manage System (EMS), whether ISO, EMAS or any other, should be preferred.
  • To favour local suppliers, at equal prices and/or quality supplied. Both aspects, price and quality, are closely related with efficacy and efficiency, in resources assignment.
